Dynamic QR Codes You Can Edit After They Are Printed

A dynamic QR code points at a short link you control, not at a fixed destination. Print it once, then change where it goes as often as you need — the pattern on the poster never changes.

A static QR code has your destination baked into the pattern itself. Get the URL wrong, move the page, or run a campaign that ends, and the only fix is a reprint. A dynamic QR code solves that by encoding a short link you own: the printed pattern stays identical forever while the destination behind it is yours to edit, as many times as you like, from your dashboard. That single difference is what turns a QR code from a one-shot graphic into an asset you keep using. It is also what makes scan analytics possible at all — because every scan passes through your short link on the way to the destination, you can see how many people scanned, when, from where, and on what kind of device. Every QR code uqr.ai creates is dynamic by default, on every plan including the free one, and none of them are ever deactivated: if your subscription lapses you drop to the free plan's limits, but codes you already printed keep resolving. Print it once. Change it forever.

Six things you can only do with a dynamic code

Change a menu without reprinting a single table tent

This is the case that sells dynamic codes on its own. Print one code per table, point it at today's menu, and when the kitchen changes a price or drops a dish, you edit the destination instead of reprinting forty laminated cards. The same physical code can serve brunch at eleven and dinner at six by pointing at two different pages on a schedule you control. Restaurants that switched to dynamic codes stop treating the menu as a print job and start treating it as a page they edit — which is what it always should have been. If you run several locations, each one gets its own code and its own scan count, so you can see which rooms actually use it.

Fix a typo after the flyers are already at the printer

Everyone has shipped a wrong URL at some point. With a static code the flyers are wasted. With a dynamic one it is a thirty-second edit: open the code, correct the destination, save, and every flyer in the box starts working. The same forgiveness applies to a page you later move or rename — the printed code does not care what your URL structure looks like this quarter, because it only ever points at your short link. Treat that as insurance on every print run you commission.

Reissue a document without reissuing the code

Manuals, spec sheets, price lists, and safety instructions all get revised. If the QR code on the product points straight at version-three.pdf, every revision orphans the printed code. Point it at a dynamic code instead and you upload the new PDF, swap the destination, and every unit already in the field now opens the current document. This is the difference between a code printed on packaging being a liability and being an asset — and it is why dynamic codes are worth the setup on anything with a long shelf life.

Keep a business card current after you change jobs

A vCard QR code on a business card normally freezes your details at the moment of printing. New phone number, new title, new company — new cards. A dynamic vCard code keeps the printed card useful: update the contact details in your dashboard and every card you have ever handed out starts sharing the new ones. The person who scanned it last year gets your current number when they scan it again. For anyone who prints cards in bulk, that alone pays for the difference.

Rotate one printed code between campaigns

A code on a shop window, a vehicle, or a piece of signage is expensive to change and easy to leave stale. Dynamic codes let one durable placement carry a sequence of campaigns: point it at your Instagram in spring, at a seasonal landing page in summer, at a booking form for the holidays. The scan analytics tell you whether the placement is worth keeping at all, and because the destination is editable you can test two offers behind the same code in consecutive weeks rather than paying for two signs.

Redirect an old code to whatever matters now

Codes outlive campaigns. A dynamic code means the WiFi card from two years ago, the sticker on a delivery box, and the code at the bottom of an old receipt are all still addressable — you can point any of them at a review request, a current offer, or your homepage rather than letting them dead-end. Every one of those printed surfaces is inventory you already paid for. Static codes throw it away; dynamic codes let you keep spending it.

How to create a dynamic QR code

  1. 1

Pick what the code should do

Choose a type — a link, a PDF, a menu, a vCard, WiFi, a payment, and more. The type decides what the destination page looks like; the code itself is dynamic either way.

  2. 2

    Add your destination

Paste a URL or upload a file. This is the value you will be able to change later, so it does not need to be final — you can point the code at a placeholder and edit it before you print.

  3. 3

    Brand it

Set your colors, drop your logo in the middle, and pick a frame with a call to action. Codes with a short instruction like Scan for menu reliably get scanned more than a bare pattern.

  4. 4

    Download and print

Export PNG or SVG at print resolution. Downloading creates the code in your account, which is what makes it editable and trackable from then on — so sign in or create a free account at this step.

Editable forever

Change the destination as many times as you like, on any plan. The printed pattern never changes, so nothing you have already produced goes stale.

Never deactivated

We do not switch off codes you have printed. If your plan lapses you go back to free-plan limits, but existing codes keep resolving — the sticker on a box does not stop working because a card expired.

Scans tracked from the first one

Because every scan passes through your short link, you get scan counts, timing, location, and device breakdowns without adding anything to the printed code.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a dynamic and a static QR code?+

A static code encodes the destination directly in the pattern, so changing the destination means generating and printing a new code. A dynamic code encodes a short link you control, so the pattern stays fixed while the destination is editable. Only dynamic codes can report scans, because only they route the scan through a link you own.

Do dynamic QR codes expire?+

Ours do not. Codes you create are never deactivated, on any plan, including free. If a paid subscription ends you return to the free plan's limits for creating new codes, but the codes you already printed keep working. Expiry is available as an option you can deliberately switch on per code, never as something that happens to you.

Can I create dynamic QR codes for free?+

Yes. The free plan includes five dynamic codes, and every one of them is editable and tracked. The five slots are a shared pool across dynamic QR codes and standalone short links. Paid plans start at 8 dollars a month, or about 5 dollars a month billed annually, which raises the pool to 25; Pro and Business remove the limit entirely.

Will editing the destination break codes people already scanned?+

No. The printed pattern is unchanged, so any code in the wild keeps resolving — it simply arrives at the new destination. Anyone who scanned it before will land on the updated page the next time they scan. There is no version of the code to reissue.

How many times can I change the destination?+

As often as you want, with no cap and no per-edit charge. Editing is part of what a dynamic code is, not an add-on. Practically, people edit seasonal codes a few times a year and menu codes weekly.

Does a dynamic code look different from a static one?+

It looks the same to anyone scanning, and it scans with any standard camera app — there is no app to install on either side. A dynamic code often looks slightly simpler, because a short link holds less data than a long destination URL, and less data means fewer modules in the pattern. Fewer modules is genuinely useful: the code stays readable when printed small, on curved packaging, or from a distance, which is a practical reason to prefer dynamic codes even for destinations you never plan to change.
